REPORT: Day 3 at THIMUN

THIMUN really came together for me today, my resolution is making it and speeches began.

BLOGGING FROM: Well I am sitting here in the Disarmament Commission listening to a few hundred opening speeches. Though each one is only one minute, you can imagine how long of a process this is. Basically I am surrounded by students, many of whom are writing notes to the chair-men or taking notes on laptops or by hand.

Today

We came together as a commission this morning and had a general information meeting. After so the opening speeches began. Unfortunately, only one delegate was able to speak in each commission so I gave Phil the chance. Don’t worry though I’ll speak on our resolution [more on that later], but I did write most of Phil’s speech.

The speeches run very long, but we can come and go as long as one delegate is here during the speeches. We are sitting next to Johnny the delegate from Lesotho; he’s from England and is hilarious. His speech was great, I wish I would’ve recorded it, he held up money and said, “This is money.” Then he ripped and threw it behind him saying, “This is a waste of money.” This immediately grabbed everyone’s attention, and his speech covered programs that aren’t useful in the United Nations.

So during and after the speeches we put the finishing touches on our resolution, then we waited in line and printed it out. We got our 15 countries to sign off on it and now we’re ready to go. Unfortunately, we are the fourth topic to be discussed on the agenda, though this does mean we have more time for preparation.

My original resolution was used for a number of pieces of this super resolution. It ends up working very well along a big scale. Though I was not the main submitter of this resolution I will touch on the topics that I have written about and researched.

Hopefully our topic will be brought up first thing Thursday morning, which would be great because more people are focused before lunch. Currently, our group has now been working diligently to prepare for the questions that will likely be thrown at our resolution.

So today was the finishing touches day, tomorrow the real debating begins. Phil and I split up and go into separate buildings as we begin debating the earliest resolutions. I am really looking forward to the setting and getting into politics.

Well that’s all for today.

Until tomorrows events…
