thinking out loud

I came across across a story on digg the other day which was an opinionated article on PC magazine’s John C. Dvorak, who I refuse to link to because he does enough of that on This Week in Tech.

The article, which must have been pulled from digg because I can’t find it anywhere, was about Dvorak’s opinions on Apple and Nike’s new Nike Plus system…which of course he thought was dumb.

I thought digg users would tear Dvorak apart, I think he is insane, but there was many of them who supported this guy and those who called him crazy were being buried.

Because I don’t write for the M$ fanboy magazine, I am sure that my opinions don’t matter, though they might even make more sense than Dvorak’s, but this is my blog and I am going to tell you what I think.

One of the most interesting comments I saw was defending how smart Dvorak was for “predicting” how Apple would switch to running Windows operating systems on their hardware. If we look back on that article, which I found yesterday, Dvorak thought Apple would/will rid themselves of their OS altogether and run a Windows operating system. Now they have simply opened themselves up and show no intentions of killing OSX.

So was he right…I would say no, just lucky that Apple opened themselves up at all. But everyone sort of thought that the switch to Intel would bring upon some of these kinds of openings.

Dvorak has also openly bashed the Web 2.0 community, saying that it is the same as Web 1.0. Now he can have this opinion, and thats fine, but look at his website…if you want proof of what web 1.0 is look below…Holy 1999 web design Batman

The TWiT listeners seem to really like Dvorak, but as an Apple user his slams against my favorite computer company just really drive me crazy…I know there are others out there like me, I’d take Kevin Rose on TWiT over Dvorak any day.

To close out my rant I would just like to quote Mr. Dvorak, a quote that I found from a TWiT user’s comment…

The Macintosh uses an experimental pointing device called a ‘mouse’. There is no evidence that people want to use these things.

That quote is too funny! It reminds me of the Bill Gates quote about how nobody would need more than 32k or something like that.

Dvorak is just cranky, he doesn’t speak highly of anything. He has complimented Apple on it’s case design and other things in the past, though. He has also been quite good at pointing out Microsoft’s problems.

I’m a Mac user too; have never once had a PC in my house. He used to bother me, but now I find him entertaining.

I think I read a quote from Gates about how DRM was going to blow over, or something like that.

I understand his crankiness, I guess I am not a big fan of negativity and it seems no matter how a product is Dvorak will find the flaws even if they are far-fetched. What really drove me over the edge was his bashing of web 2.0…we are really taking huge steps online and hearing his slams really made me angry.
